Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve the quality and lower the costs of health care, but often requires access to vast quantities of medical information to do so. This session will explore how health care privacy laws such as HIPAA apply to the development and use of AI, including issues such as whether development of AI potentially qualifies as “research” and the prohibition on the “sale” of protected health information.
