Clinical research often involves the collection of sensitive personal information and the transfer of such information across international borders. However, because clinical research is regulated by laws governing research involving human subjects, personal information collected in research is often treated differently under privacy laws than other types of sensitive information, which can make it challenging to advise clients on the application of privacy laws to research activities. This session will provide guidance on recent developments applicable to clinical research activities under the DOJ Bulk Data Rule, state privacy laws and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.
